MARY STRATTON RAYNOR SMITH Taken from Elgin Daily News, Saturday, 18 Sep 1886. Mrs. May S. SMITH, wife of John M. SMITH, died suddenly about 6 o’clock last Saturday evening. Mrs. SMITH was born on the 27th of Nov. 1818, and was therefore sixty-eight years of age. She came with her husband to Dundee in 1836, where they resided until the time of her death. She leaves a fond husband and loving son to mourn her loss. Mrs. SMITH had been a great sufferer during the last years of her life, yet she bore all of her afflictions with wonderful fortitude and Christian resignation. The quiet, gentle, patient bearing of the departed one came like a benediction upon all. She was ever thoughtful of the welfare and the comfort of others. No needy one ever came to her door and was turned away unhelped. She will be missed—as she was loved—by all. A very large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral services, which were held Monday afternoon at the house. Also, Mrs. John M. SMITH died suddenly at her residence here on Saturday afternoon. She was giving instructions about supper, when apparently she laid her head down. If (sic) five minutes or thereabouts she was a corpse. She was an old settler, in fact among the first in Dundee, coming here in 1836. The funeral was held from her late residence on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A.W. Ferris, assisted by Rev. Bell, and was largely attended by relatives and old friends.
