JOHN M SMITH Source unknown LONG LIFE ENDED. John M. Smith of Dundee, Father of Supervisor, Dies Wednesday. John M. SMITH, age 93 years, father of J.R. SMITH, chairman of the board of supervisors, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at his home at Dundee. Deceased had been seriously ill for two years. About a year ago he suffered from blood poisoning, caused by the bite of a pet parrot. He rallied from the attack, but the attending physicians predicted that he could not survive long on account of his advanced age. Mr. SMITH was a former businessman of Chicago, a member of the firm of J.A. Smith & Co., 118 Lake street. He settled in Dundee township in an early day and engaged in farming. He leaves a large estate. Deceased was born in Waterville, N.Y., Aug. 23, 1811 [Note: a different obituary gives his date of birth as August 28, 1810]. At the age of 24 years he went to New York city and purchased a stock of goods and started for Chicago by stage coach in 1835, where he joined his brother, James A. SMITH, in the then well known manufacturing company of Smith & Co., 118 Lake street. Shortly after his arrival in the great western metropolis he visited Dundee and decided to take up a residence there. Mr. SMITH was a man of gentle manners and his death brings to a close a long and useful career. He was a man of honor, beloved by his family and respected by acquaintances. In 1836 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Stratton RAYNOR of Montrose, Pa. James R. SMITH of Dundee, an only son, and a granddaughter, Mrs. C.T. [Colonel Thomas] DAHLIN, of this city, survive him, as do three sisters, Mrs. Lydia HOAGLAND and Mrs. Mary COLE of Elgin and Mrs. EVERETT of Kansas. The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon from the house at Dundee.
