FRED SAFFORD PASSES AWAY First Taken Seriously Ill Last Sunday Though Not in Good Health for Some Time. ORIGINAL 'NIC COLDWATER' Humorous Writings for Newspapers Gained Deceased Note-Funeral Will Be Held Sunday Afternoon. Fred F. SAFFORD, forty-two years old, member of the cement firm of R. S. Safford & Son, died at the St. Charles hospital this morning at 9:35 o'clock. Death was due to Kidney trouble. The death of Fred SAFFORD who had not been in good health for several months, takes away one of the best known men about town in Aurora. He was at one time prominent in club and lodge circles. He gained note by humorous writings for newspapers. Few Aurorans knew that SAFFORD was the original "Nic Coldwater." Paragraphs in "B. L. T's" column in the Chicago Tribune signed "Nic Coldwater" were from SAFFORD's pen. Taken Down Last Sunday. While he was not been in good health for several months he was first taken seriously ill last Sunday and was removed to St. Charles hospital. There was no hope of recovery in the last days of his sickness. Besides his father he is survived by a widow, Mrs. Bessie SAFFORD; who was Miss Bessie CULVER of Sandwich, and a sister, Mrs. Henry CHENEY. They were married in 1900. His first wife was Miss Luella REES. The funeral will be held from the home of the father, R. S. SAFFORD, 245 Walnut street, Sunday afternoon at three o'clock. Rev. E. H.
