Pioneer Local Doctor Dies of Heart Attack Dr. M. S. RICE, 81, well known local physician, died suddenly of a heart attack in his office in the Leland hotel at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. He was conversing with a patient and suddenly collapsed. Physicians, hurriedly summoned, could not revive him. The doctor had practically recovered from an attack of grip suffered before Christmas. He had taken an automobile ride with members of his family earlier in the afternoon and was in his usual jovial mood. Dr. RICE was born July 16, 1852, at Fort Atkinson, Wis., his father, a native of Vermont, being one of the pioneer settlers of Wisconsin. After graduating from Lawrence University, Appleton, Wis., he entered Hahnemann Medical college, Chicago, graduating in the class of 1875. After a short period of practice in Chicago he located at Downer Grove. There he married Alice EMIGH, June 7, 1877, moving the following year to Aurora where he had practiced continuously for 55 years. Five years ago Dr. and Mrs. RICE sold their North Fourth street home, in which they had resided for nearly 50 years, to St. Charles hospital, and have since lived at the Hotel Leland. Dr. RICE is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. M. Edgar MASON, and a son, Emigh RICE, all of Aurora, and a sister, Mrs. Matilda WINSLOW, of Fort Atkinson, Wis. The RICE's celebrated their golden wedding, June 7, 1927. Dr. RICE in his earlier years took an active part in the work of the Park Place Baptist church and Sunday school and in later years had been a member of the First Baptist church. He enjoyed a wide circle of friends. The funeral services of which the Rev. M. Ray McKay will have charge, will be held at the Healy chapel at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon.
