J. GREENAWAY, 86, Ex-Justice Of Peace, Dies J.W. GREENAWAY, 15 North Anderson St., one of the most widely known men in Aurora, died Sunday at the Knights Templar home in Paxton, Ill. He was 86-years old. Known as "Judge" because of his many years as an Aurora Justice of the Peace, Mr. GREENAWAY until recent months was a familiar figure on downtown streets as he greeted friends while strolling thru the business district almost every day. Following World War I, Mr. GREENAWAY published a book which gave pictures and sketches of the Aurora residents who had served during the campaign, and which also listed leading Aurora residents and building. He produced a similar volume after World War II, a tremendous undertaking because of the large number of Aurorans in uniform, and because of his advanced age. He became ill before the book was completed, but he finished it in spite of his handicap, and today copies rest in many Aurora homes. Mr. GREENAWAY was a member of the original Aurora Zouaves, the "Red-legged Centipede," in which members went thru elaborate maneuvers without commanding, changing pace and direction on certain numbers reached while counting cadence themselves. This unit traveled all over the United States, and during a 14-months tour of Europe, appeared before every king and emperor. Mr. GREENAWAY was secretary of the Zouaves, who thrilled crowds with thier work at the Aurora Centennial in 1937 when they were all well along in years. Mr. GREENAWAY was born in Aurora May 6, 1873, and had lived here all his life. He was a member of Jersualem Temple Lodge 90, AF & AM, Knights Templar, Medinah Temple, Royal Arch Masons, and the Odd Fellows lodge. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frances LAMPHLER and two granddaughters of Wheaton. His wife, Mrs. F. Maude GREENAWAY, died less than two months ago on May 14. Funeral services will be held at the Healy chapel at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. John L. Figley officiating. Interment will be in Spring Lake cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after noon Tuesday. Jerusalem Temple Lodge No. 90 will conduct Masonic services at the chapel at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
