Mrs. Brophy was born in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day, 1833, and for many years the family has gathered at the Scott home in this city on the anniversary of her birth. She had been in feeble health for some time, but took to her bed only two weeks ago, Deceased is survived by six children, Richard, George, and Wesley of Aurora; Mrs. Elizabeth Scott of this city whom Mrs. Brophy made her home; Mrs. David FLYNN of Sugar Grove, and Mrs. W.J. WALKER of Milwaukee, Wisc. One daughter, Mrs. C.H. MILLS, died two years ago. There are 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. When nine years of age her father's family first settled at London, Canada, and there deceased married Thomas Brophy, in Oct. 1855. They came to Aurora 45 years ago. Thomas Brophy died 10 years ago, and since that time Mrs. Brophy has resided with the daughter here. In her personal Christian life Mrs. Brophy has bequeathed to her loved ones a rich and never failing heritage for she was a Christian who so adorned the Christian faith and so revealed the Christian virtues, that her life has made a lasting impression not only upon the members of her own family, but upon all who made her acquaintance. She was baptised in the Christian faith in childhood in the Episcopalian Low Church and in her early teens was confirmed and became a member of that church in London, Canada, where she was a member all the remaining years of her life. She was devoted to her church to be sure but that was because she was devoted to her Savior. Her life was daily guided and sustained by prayer and the promise of God's Holy Word, for she treasured in her heart and committed to memory entire chapters and books of the Holy Bible. She smiled at the thought of death and expressed her desire to go and at last when her Maker called she fell asleep beautifully and peacefully - and most certainly the poem was written for her also: Asleep in jesus! blessed sleep, From which none ever wakes to weep; A calm and undisturbed repose Unbroken by the last of foes. Asleep in Jesus! peaceful rest, Whose waking is supremely blest! No fear, no woe, shall dim that hour, That manifests the Savior's power. The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 1:20 o'clock in the Skoglund Chapel on State street and Rev. T. E. Ream, pastor of the First M. E. Church officiated and gave the funeral address. Mrs. Maud Ellis sang two appropriate selections. There were a large number of relatives and friends in attendance. Burial took place at Aurora, Ill., in the West Side Cemetery. Transcribed and submitted by: Pat Van Leeuwen on 6 Dec 2004.
