PERSONS C GILBERT (Synopsis) ALBARD BAIRD COLLINS HINSDALE MARTIN PERRY TEFFT WELLS WESTCOTE Persons C. GILBERT, deceased, …born Cassanovia, NY, Oct 23, 1812, son of Benjamin and Sarah WELLS GILBERT. Benjamin born aug 29, 1789, died 1816 and Sarah born March 25, 1790, died 1889, at 100 yrs. Children of Benj and Sarah were George, farmer of NY,; Persons C.; and Mary Ann, married to Gardner WESTCOTE, both now deceased. Persons was 4 yrs old at his fathers death, reared by his grandparents, Theodore and Lydia Albard GILBERT of Cassanovia, NY until age 15. At 23, in 1835, Persons came to Illinois with 2 aunts, Fannie wife of Dr. Nathan COLLINS of St.Charles; and Emeline, wife of Dr. Jos.TEFFT of Elgin, the journey being made in 2 wagons, drawn by 3 horses – one with the COLLINS and Jos.TEFFT families, the other with the Jon TEFFT family. Dr. Jos. TEFFTS 1st wife Emeline died Aug 18, 1844, and the 2 children born to them are also deceased. Mr. GILBERT took up a tract of land being the present site of the shoe factory in Elgin. (note: north east side, on present Shoe Factory Rd.) Owned at one time several fine farms, the original homestead containing 212 acres. In 1843, he removed to a farm of 176 acres on St. Charles Rd. near Elgin; in 1869 he located in the City of Elgin,where his widow still lives. On Sept. 30th 1840, Mr. GILBERT married Louisa TEFFT, born NY, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth COLLINS TEFFT, Jonathan being native of Rhode Island, Elizabeth of Poughkeepsie, NY. Louisa’s maternal grandparents were Solomon and Sarah PERRY COLLINS, the latter a cousin of Commodore PERRY. Children of the GILBERTS are: George P., born Aug.20, 1841, died as member of Comp A, 17th Ill Vol. Inf. Feb.4, 1862. Melissa, born Aug 1, 1843, died Aug 25, 1844. Mary G. the widow of A.D. MARTIN of Elgin, mother of Percy G. and Alla May. Ada H. BAIRD, an adopted daughter of the GILBERTS, wife of George W. HINSDALE. The Biographical Record of Kane Co., Illinois 1898 S.J.
