EBEN FOSS (Synopsis) ANDREWS BRANDON CALDON CHATMAN CLEVELAND DANIELS DURGIN DUSTIN ELLIOTT GREELY HITCHCOCK LOVELESS RAVLIN ROBINSON SARGENT SHARP WEBSTER WILLLIAMS Eben FOSS resides at 631 Douglas Ave., Elgin. He was born in Thornton, New Hampshire June 10, 1822, son of Eben and Mary WEBSTER FOSS; also natives of New Hampshire, the former born 9 Jan 1785 and the later 24 Apr.1793. They married at Thornton Nov.2, 1815. The mother died when Eben was quite small, her death occuring March 24, 1826, but the father survived her many years, dying March 16, 1869. The paternal grandfather, also bearing the name Eben, was a native of New Hampshire, where he was a farmer, rearing a large family: John, Eben, Langdon, Carter, Jacob, Milton, Ruth, Besty, Mrs. ROBINSON and Mrs. DURGIN. They were Congregatinalists. The Maternal grandfather was a private in the Colonial army during the Revolution and received a pension from the government. Teh great great grandmother, Mrs. DUSTIN, was once taken prisoner by indians and held captive for some time; having warned her husband and 7 children who escaped, she was unable to escape with him. She later killed 10 of the indians with help from her nurse and a boy, and returned home with their scalps. The mother of our subject had 2 brothers, Bettona nd Bradley, and perhaps others; along with several sisters: Mrs. SARGENT, Mrs. ROBINSON, Mrs. CHATHAM and Harriet who was twice married, her second husband being a Mr. GREELY who conducted a hotel in Thornton, NH. Eben FOSS of this review is the fourth of 6 children: Betton, b.10 Feb. 1817, married May 1841, died 21 Aug. 1859. Mary Ann b. 2 Aug. 1818, married Charles CALDON, died in 1882. Hannah Jane, b. 11 May 1820, married Dec 1842 to Oris HITCHCOCK and died in 1891. Eben, our subject. Bradley v. b. 29 July 1824, married 11 July 1852 and lives Laporte City, Iowa. Harriet Webster, b. 8 Feb. 1826, married to Daniel BRANDON and died in 1887. After the death of the mother, the father of these children married Charlotte ELLIOT, by whom he had a son Charles ELLIOTT, born 28 may 1828, living in California. When 16 Eben came to Campton tsp, Kane Co., where he purchased 160 acres of land. He continued to farm til 1884, when he removed to Elgin. In 1847 Mr. FOSS married Emily C. RAVLIN CLEVELAND. She had one son by her first marriage, Charles L. CLEVELAND of Scranton, Greene Co. Iowa. She died Nov. 18, 1885 at the age of 66 years. She and Mr. FOSS had 3 children: Mary WEbster, died at age one; Harriet, widow of J.A.DANIELS, died 12 Feb. 1896 in California; and Mary F. wife of J.H.WILLIAMS of Elgin.
