NATHAN PERRY COLLINS (Synopsis) BROWN GILBERT MITCHELL MORGAN ORCUTT REAM RUGGLES TEFFT WHITFORD Nathan Perry COLLINS, M.D., grandson of Solomon COLLINS and son of Dr. Nathan COLLINS, probably a native of New Hampshire, came to Kane co. in 1835, locating in Clintonville, now South Elgin. He came in company with Dr. Jos TEFFT and P.C.GILBERT, by wagon from Madison co. On arrival, they left the families in Des Plaines and on horseback searched for a place of settlement…Dr. COLLINS took up claim on the west side (South Elgin) and Dr. TEFFT on the east side of the river. Dr. COLLINS, however, moved to St. Charles the next spring. The Dr. died 1841, a few months prior to the birth of our subject. Dr. Nathan COLLINS married Miss Fannie GILBERT, born DeRuyter, NY. Of 5 children, four reached maturity: Adeline, married Thos ORCUTT; Marian, married Manley MORGAN; Lydia, married Adolphus BROWN, and Nathan PERRY. Nathan Perry COLLINS was born 9 July 1841, St. Charles, Ill. His mother died when he was about 12, and he then lived with the family of P.C.GILBERT, a relative for whom he worked for his board. He read medicine with Dr. WHITFORD of Elgin, then took a course in the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical College, graduated 11 Feb. 1868. He began practice in Earlville, Ill, taking vacations to Minnesota, where he met his wife. He was married near Lyle, Mower Co., Minn. May 5, 1870, to Mary A. WHITFORD, native of Erie Co., Penn. Her father, Asahel WHITFORD, was born in Ostego Co.NY, a farmer. From Otsego Co. he moved to Erie Co. Penn, and later returned to NY locating in Madison Co. where he married Eliza MITCHELL, born in DERuyter, Madison Co. NY, a daughter of Joseph and Mary MOSHER MITCHELL, both natives of NY. Joseph MITCHELL was a farmer; as a boy living on Nantucket Island. His (Joseph) father was a native of the Isle of Wight. After his death, his widow made her home with Mrs. COLLINS, passing Nov. 30, 1896, being the mother of 5 children, Mrs. COLLINS the only survivor. In 1866 Asahel WHITFORD, the son of Ezekiel and Arilla RUGGLES WHITFORD, removed from Madison Co. and settled near Lyle, Mower co. Minn., where he lived until just before his death when he moved to South Elgin and made his home with the COLLINS. He died May 9, 1887 at the age of 69. Dr. COLLINS returned to Earlville but closed his office and went to Minnesota with his wife. The next spring he returned to Clintonville, and built a home, on Main St. Three children were born: Fannie, who died in infancy; Cornelia W., who married Rev. Thomas REAM; and William P., a student in a Chicago medical school. Dr. COLLINS expired Dec. 24th, 1895. A member of Modern Woodmen of America, and the Clintonville lodge, A.F.and A.M. , and a Republican. The Biographical Record of Kane Co., Illinois 1898 S.J.
