SILAS BALDWIN (Synopsis) DAVIS DeWITT HILL HODGE LAMPHOR MUMPSTED NORTON WEBSTER WILLIAMS Silas BALDWIN is now living retired in the village of Hampshire, Ill. A native of Vermont, born in Dorset, Bennington Co. May 15 1823, he attended district school in Dorset Hollow. At age 26 he bought 50 acres which he cultivated for 4 years, selling maple surup. In 1853, he came west, first to Iowa, then Kane Co. where he bought 80 acres on sections 26 and 27, Hampshire township, where he lived til March, 1890. He then visited one year with relatives in the east, and in 1891 bought a home in the village of Hampshire, where he now lives. Thomas BALDWIN, his father, was born 4 Apr. 1774, and died 4 July 1854. He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth BALDWIN, he dying 9 Jan. 1808 at age 79 and she dying March 13, 1808 at the age of 60 years. Thomas BALDWIN was a blacksmith by trade, and an expert tool maker. He moved from Connecticut to Vermont about 1817. He married Polly LAMPHOR 19 Apr. 1817, who was born at Mansfield Connecticut in 1788 and died in 1862. She was the daughter of John and Mary LAMPHOR, the latter of whom died in 1813. Silas BALDWIN was the last born in a family of seven children. Two brothers still live in Vermont, and a sister in California. Silas first married in Vermont, near Dorset, to Miriam MUMPSTED, born 5 Jan 1819 and who died in Hampshire tsp 4 Nov. 1878. Of 4 children born to them, one died in Vermont, and 2 in Hampshire tsp. Living is Elizabeth Ann, who married Burdette C. DeWITT, with 6 children: Lillian, wife of J. William WEBSTER; Benjamin C.; Charles; Miriam E.; Roxie L.; and Hazel M. Silas' second marriage was at Tecumseh, Mich. where he married Mrs. Louisa NORTON, widow of James T. NORTON, born at Poultney, Rutland Co., Vermont and a daughter of Abijah WILLIAMS Sr., of Mass., born 28 Apr 1785 and who died at Poultney, Vermont 27 June 1845. at the age of 60 years. Abijah WILLIAMS Sr. was the son of John WILLIAMS who married Asenathe HODGE. John WILLIAMS was one of 3 brothers who came from England in Colonial days. Abijah WILLIAMS Jr. married Lucinda HILL, born in Hartford, Conn., and a daughter of Thomas and Lydia DAVIS HILL, her father being a Rev. War soldier. Mr. BALDWIN was formerly an abolitionist, voting first for James G. Birney. He became a Republican, and has continued with that party until the present time. For 25 years, he served as school director, supervisor 3 years, and has served as road commisioneer, school trustee and village trustee, and was superintendent of Sunday schools in an early day for several years.
